Q - Know your tutor

As a passionate and goal-oriented tutor, I successfully assisted middle school and high school students in a variety of math subjects ( pre-algebra, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus AB and BC, Trigonometry) for the past 5 years. By creating an interactive and engaging learning environment along with personalized teaching plans, I am dedicated to improve the learning efficiency to boost test scores. My students are able to get “A” (90+) on final exams. Some students were skipped on level math course and advanced to next grade- level class via CBE (credit by exam) after being tutored during Spring or early summer. In addition, I tutored SAT test-prep (reading, writing and math) during past two years with deep understanding of SAT test strategies and different types of questions. I hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Texas Tech University, where I also worked as a teaching assistant to grade homework and set weekly Q&A sessions for undergraduates. In addition to my technical skills, my patience, responsibility, and interpersonal skills have been as important as my knowledge in motivating students to strive for their academic goals. I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring my expertise and passion to young students and help them excel in academic performance so that they can prepare well to their dream colleges.

Class overview

I believe each student is unique. By establishing personalized lesson plans based on the individual student's performance, I was able to help students to achieve academic goals more efficiently. By focusing on practice drills, confidence-building, and fostering inspiring learning environment, the students are able to master the learned concepts and build the solid foundation as well as being prepared for challenging problems during the school exams. I like to apply interactive teaching approach to keep the student engaged in the class. In addition, I would assign the appropriate amount and level of homework to reinforce their undrstanding. I would make myself available for questions between classes and monitor students' homework and progress. More importantly, effective communication with students are also important to maximize learning effieicy and reduce test anxiety.

The tutor and student worked through several problems focused on calculating the mean (average) of sets of numbers. They practiced finding averages with missing information, determining a new number added to a set, and solving for an unknown variable using algebraic equations derived from average calculations. The next session will cover range and median.
