Ca Shunn - Know your tutor
I’m Ca Shunn Harris — a math tutor with a bachelor’s degree, 7+ years of experience, and way too much passion for helping people finally say, “Ohhh, that makes sense now.” I got my start tutoring kids in my community, and after earning my mathematics degree, I decided to take this whole education thing full-time. These days, I help students of all levels with personalized learning plans, math tips and tricks, practice drills, homework help, and test prep. Algebra, calculus, trigonometry; you name it, I've conquered them all. So whatever you need, I’ve got your back. Outside of tutoring, I’m usually playing soccer, gaming on Xbox or PlayStation, or grinding through Call of Duty Zombies like it's a part-time job. I’m a Manchester City fan, and yes — Alexander Isak is that guy for me. Everyone can learn. Seriously. So let’s get started with you.

Class overview
My tutoring approach is all about making learning click through interactive and visual explanations that build real confidence and help students understand the ideas behind the problems. I focus on strengthening core concepts and adapting to each students learning style so the material actually makes sense rather than feeling like a bunch of random steps to memorize. I specialize in Math, Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, and several other subjects at the high school level, giving students a strong foundation for both classwork and future courses. I use a variety of tech tools, such as an iPad and a stylus, to create lessons that are clear, visual, and sometimes entertaining enough to keep even the most overwhelmed student engaged. I follow a structured curriculum that stays aligned with school standards while also giving students a clearer path to understanding each topic. With over 50 students taught, I have worked with a wide range of academic needs and personalities, and I take pride in creating a supportive learning environment that helps every student grow. My goal is always to make learning feel achievable and to guide students with a personalized approach that truly works for them.

Mathematics concepts taught by Ca Shunn
The tutor and student reviewed trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) and their application in solving for missing sides and angles in right triangles. They also practiced classifying triangles as acute, obtuse, or right using the converse of the Pythagorean theorem. The session concluded with the student feeling more clarity on these topics.
Trigonometric Ratios (SOH CAH TOA)
Classifying Triangles by Side Lengths
Solving for Missing Sides using Trig
Finding Missing Angles using Inverse Trig
The Tutor and Student reviewed various advanced algebra topics, including domain calculations for combined functions, the equation of a circle, and properties of quadratic functions such as vertex and x-intercepts. They also practiced function composition and operations, and evaluated functions at specific points, with plans to reinforce these concepts due to their complexity.
Function Composition and Operations
Finding Vertex and X-Intercepts of a Parabola
Equation of a Circle
Domain of Combined Functions
The student and tutor worked through various mathematical concepts including ratio problems, calculating the volumes of pyramids and cones, and simplifying radical expressions. The tutor provided examples and guided the student through problem-solving steps for each topic. The tutor sent a document with practice problems and answer sheets for the covered topics.
Ratio Problems
Volumes of Pyramids and Cones
Simplification of Radical Expressions
The Tutor and Student worked on advanced function operations, covering addition, subtraction, and multiplication, with a strong focus on determining the correct domain for each resulting function. They reviewed domain rules for linear, root, and quadratic functions, and practiced applying these rules to combined functions, with plans to continue their review session.
Combining Functions: Operations
Domain of Combined Functions
Interpreting Domain Notation (Brackets vs. Parentheses)
Domain of Rational and Square Root Functions
The session covered expressing functions as composites and finding the difference quotient for linear and quadratic functions. The Student practiced applying the difference quotient formula and worked on improving algebraic manipulation skills. The tutor suggested using ChatGPT for additional practice problems on the difference quotient.
Function Composition: Breaking Down Functions
Function Composition: Identifying G(x) and F(x)
Difference Quotient: Formula and Application
Difference Quotient: Algebraic Manipulation
Difference Quotient: Simplification through Cancellation
The student and tutor worked through problems involving the equation of a circle, specifically finding the equation given the center and a point. They then moved on to function operations, focusing on the quotient of functions and determining domain restrictions. Finally, they reviewed how to find the maximum or minimum of quadratic functions and the x-coordinate where these occur. The student plans to practice these concepts further before an upcoming exam.
