Danish - Know your tutor

I'm Danish Nayyar, and I think that every mathematical difficulty is really a visualization issue. I went from being a peer tutor in my college dorms to a specialist teacher for international students over the course of the last four years. My method is straightforward: we don't proceed to step two until you can visualize step one. I don't begin my Calculus lessons with the Power Rule. I begin by introducing the idea of "infinitesimals." I want my students to understand that a curve is really a collection of little straight lines. This "Basics-First" approach guarantees that when a student takes an exam, they are recreating the logic from begin rather than merely reciting a formula they have memorized. My "Basics-First" mentality is greatly influenced by my coding experience. Similar to how a single syntax mistake in programming may ruin a 1,000-line script, a difficult Calculus problem in college-level math might be derailed by a misinterpretation of a fundamental algebraic property. The first thing I do when I start working with a new student is a "Structural Audit." We search for the "cracks" in their base. Does the student's lack of understanding of the unit circle cause them to struggle with trigonometry? Does the inability to visualize a vector transformation make Linear Algebra confusing? By addressing these underlying issues, I enable the learner to tackle issues that they previously believed to be "impossible." This approach creates the logical framework they will require for their whole academic career, not only to help them pass a test.

Mathematics concepts taught by Danish

Student learned 4 days ago

The tutor and student reviewed the fundamentals of functions, including domain and range, and then delved into the definition and properties of rational functions. The primary focus was on determining the domain of rational functions by identifying and excluding values that make the denominator zero. The session concluded with an introduction to solving rational equations, setting up a problem for the student to solve as homework.
