Owen Your chemistry tutor
My name is Owen, and as a Neuroscience major at UNC with a 3.9 GPA, I’ve learned that success comes from mastering the fundamentals and truly playing with the problems until they make sense. Whether you are battling Gen Chem or diving into Organic or biochemistry, I believe that anything is possible when it comes to your learning. I was taught by the UNC learning center in upper level education classes on a style of teaching that is about asking questions and helping whomever I work with push forward and figure out the answers to help reinforce their own learning. Whether that is working on homework problems, or if you need extra help and would like me to do a little extra work to put together some practice problems to tackle some key concepts, I can do it all. I also have plenty of resources from the past that helped me succeed. I currently am starting dental school at the University of Michigan, ranked number one in the country. I have extensive experience with standardized testing, whether that be the MCAT or the DAT, OAT, and other science based examinations, I am always happy to help with both guidance and improvement on scores. I strongly believe that any subject can be enjoyable, and I have tutored in 13 subjects, from neuroscience or Chinese to biology, and I would say chemistry is by far one of my favorite subjects, especially learning the foundations of organic chemistry or general chemistry, as those are imperative to the future.

Chemistry concepts taught by Owen
The tutor and student reviewed various organic chemistry reaction mechanisms, including SN1, SN2, elimination, and addition reactions. They practiced problem-solving, discussed spectral analysis, and clarified concepts like rearrangements and acid-base chemistry. The student expressed a need for more practice, and they planned to continue working through problems.
SN1 vs. SN2 Reactions
Acid-Base Reactions in Organic Chemistry
Elimination Reactions (E1 and E2)
Spectroscopic Analysis (IR and Mass Spectrometry)
Electrophilic Addition Reactions
The tutor and student reviewed concepts related to chemical kinetics, including reaction orders, half-lives, and the Arrhenius equation. They practiced applying the Arrhenius equation to calculate activation energy and discussed the influence of temperature and catalysts on reaction rates. The next session will address catalysts and potentially metal complexes, and the student will provide updated exam information.
Collision Theory and Activation Energy
The Arrhenius Equation
Reaction Order and Integrated Rate Laws
The student and tutor reviewed chemical kinetics, focusing on rate laws, integrated rate laws, and half-lives for zero, first, and second-order reactions. They practiced identifying reaction orders from graphical data and applying formulas to calculate half-lives and initial concentrations, with plans to move to temperature-dependent reaction rates next.
Integrated Rate Laws and Order of Reactions
Rate Constant (k) and Its Units
Half-Life in Chemical Kinetics
Determining Reaction Order from Plots
The tutor and student reviewed the relationship between reaction rates and stoichiometry, then delved into integrated rate laws and their graphical representations for zero, first, and second-order reactions. They practiced calculating rate constants from half-life data, and planned to work on more kinetics problems in the next session.
Integrated Rate Laws and Linear Graphs
Determining Rate Constants (k)
Relating Rates of Reactants and Products
The tutor and student reviewed concepts related to chemical bonding, including energy diagrams, bond order, bond length, and atomic radii. They practiced drawing Lewis dot structures for various molecules like CH4, SiO, SO3, N2, and NO3-, focusing on valence electron counts, octet rule, and formal charges. The session also introduced molecular geometry and resonance structures, with plans to continue practicing complex examples in the next session.

Atomic Size and Periodic Trends
Resonance Structures
The tutor and student reviewed chemical kinetics, focusing on reaction orders, integrated rate laws, and graphical analysis. They practiced determining reaction orders from rate laws and concentration-time graphs, and calculating reaction rates. The session also touched upon half-lives and the concept of the rate-limiting step, with plans to continue practicing these concepts in future sessions.
